Web Comic Illustration: Social Media Sleeplessness

(used as a featured image for a blog post)

This web comic was inspired by a 2016 technology & health report finding that said people who use social media too much may be negatively impacting their sleep or sleeping habits.

Project Approach

  • Content: I authored a humorous narrative to poke fun at the “social media sleeplessness” aspects of the report findings.
  • Storyboarding: Based on my content, I then created a 3-panel strip for this web comic concept.
  • Original Artwork: I used a mixed-media approach to draw out the strip, incorporating a medley of pen, markers, crayons, and colored pencils to create the artwork/strip.
  • Digital Refinements: Using Adobe Photoshop, I adjusted details to create more vibrant colors and subtle lighting effects. I also used Photoshop to add bubble captions along with relevant emojis to emphasize tone and humor as well as the social media aspects of the strip.

I created this 3-panel web comic strip using a combination of pens, markers, crayons, and colored pencils. I then took the final art, imported into Adobe Photoshop, and made adjustments to saturation and lighting to finalize the artwork for the strip.

Initial Doodled Concept

Initial concept for web comic via rough doodle sketch

This web comic strip first started with an extremely crude doodle that I rushed onto paper only to document the creative thought so that I wouldn’t forget the idea(s) that came to mind. As I developed this initial concept further, I broke out my original 1-panel idea into three (3) specific scenes.
