CHARACTER ILLUSTRATION & VALUE STUDIES of “OCTELLE HUITE”
(Character ideation and development for possible use in children’s book illustration and self publishing project)
In this series of character illustration value studies, we see a distressed octopus — named Octelle Huite —receiving surprising news right before bedtime! The scene’s details, such as the bed’s frame, the nightstand, the laptop’s logo, and outdoor window scene all emphasize the character’s underwater setting.
- Character Sketches: I first began playing with ideas for this character using Adobe Sketch mobile app and Apple Pencil on my iPad Pro.
- Scene Sketch: Once I narrowed down my character illustration concept ideas and scene settings, I then narrowed down the scene to the one where the octopus character is shocked or upset while sitting with his computer/laptop open.
- Original Artwork: Using my UGEE 2150 graphics tablet and Adobe Photoshop, I began to digitally draw out the scene with far more setting details.
- Digital Painting: Using a number of Adobe Photoshop brushes, I used various black and white values to complete my black and white digital painting of this character illustration and scene.
