Unfinished Exploration Using Chalk Pastels

,
Tall Trees And Scenic View In Reston, Virginia Using Chalk Pastels

I recently began to explore drawing with chalk pastels.

They’re a lot of fun but pretty messy to use — almost every single stroke leaves chalk dust just about everywhere!

Still, I especially enjoy using my fingers to add or spread color.

While the drawing shared here is very much unfinished, I’m excited about working with chalk pastels and will continue to explore drawing with them, as time permits.

Hi. My Name is Mayra. I’m an Illustrator (In Progress).

Mayra Ruiz-McPherson: a self-portait

In progress means still in training. Or maybe more like refinement.

Either way, I have more than 20 years of commercial design experience under my belt.

This experience includes:

  • graphic design
  • interface design
  • brand and identity
  • packaging and signage
  • advertising
  • marketing collateral
  • newsletter design
  • email design
  • social media

Despite all my design experience, I never once thought I’d pursue illustration.

That just had not been the plan, or so I thought.

Illustration hadn’t ever really been on my radar until only in the last few years when I started thinking about what’s next in my design career. Where else can I take my design experience beyond where’s it’s been and all I’d done, I wondered.

You can read more about my journey and background in my FAQs here.

For now, here I am working on adding illustration to my design repertoire.

Learn along with me and see how my illustration styles and ideas unfold. I will also share current projects as well as review art books, art supplies, as well as digital tools (like apps or software) along the way.

Thanks for being here!
